ConocoPhillips Grant Awarded KMS 8th Grade Science Teachers

Lana Bradford, (pictured far left) and Patrick Sannes, (pictured back center),  have been awarded a grant of $8963 to be used to benefit science students here at Koogler Middle School. Awarding the grant was Kristy Robinson, (pictured at the podium), she represents the philanthropic committee at ConocoPhillips.

The focus of their proposal to ConocoPhillips was to begin to put together a Physical Science lab for their students. The money received will be spent on tracks, cars, timers, and other equipment used to teach the State required physical science standards for 8th grade.  This effort will benefit the students by allowing an opportunity for more hands on exploration of the concepts to promote retention.

Just another example of Koogler Middle School teachers striving to provide the finest in educational opportunities for our students!

Sheriff's Department teaches mathematics

On October 21st, Sgt Budd and Deputy McCoy from the San Juan County Sheriff's Department came to KMS to teach a real life math lesson. Mrs. Jantz invited the officers to illustrate how they apply math in the course of the investigations they conduct. Sgt. Budd is an Expert Crash Investigator who uses many graphs and equations to solve different aspects of a crash scene he must evaluate.

Students were given an excellent example of how math can be applied in the world of work. Sgt. Budd illustrated the revelance and value of mathematics to the students and encouraged them to find other way that mathematics can be applied in their daily lives.

It was a pleasure to have members of our Sheriff's Department on campus and serving our community as teachers for a day. Many thanks to our friends Sgt Budd and Deputy McCoy.

On October 27th Koogler Middle School F.A.C.E.S. students took a field trip to The Hiway Grill here in Aztec. While there they experienced several facets of restaurant operation. One group of students was engaged in preparing the speciality of the house - chicken enchiladas served with rice and beans. Another group was assigned to the task of preparing the lunch salads. Our final group enjoyed taking on the role of the hostess, making sure the dining room was properly prepared for guests.

Following their work, all the students and their teachers, Ms. Welsh and Ms. Hutchens gathered  to share lunch together. We appreciate The Hiway Grill's hospitality and graciousness with providing a real life experience in the restaurant business. A component of our F.A.C.E.S. curriculum includes food service within the vocational module. Being able to apply skills learned in the classroom  in an actual operational business brings relevence to the students and expands their understanding of the business world.

Aztec, a community working together for the benefit of our students.
